BRIGHTON, Mass. — An Uber driver is facing charges for the alleged indecent assault and battery of a woman, police say.
Police started the investigation after the victim reported the incident on April 14. During an interview with the woman, she described being out with her friend, and after having a few alcoholic beverages, they requested a ride from the Uber app.
Once the Uber driver arrived, the victim told police he started asking inappropriate questions. As the ride progressed, the complaint indicates the suspect continued to ask the victim to expose herself before making sexual gestures while operating the vehicle.
When they arrived at the alleged victim’s house, the criminal complaint says the woman tried to exit the car, but the suspect quickly turned his body towards her and reached out to grab her chest. The victim then punched the suspect in the face. She told police she then got out of the car and went into her apartment.
The victim described the vehicle as a Black Lexus GX and said that the suspect was a light-skinned Indian male approximately 25 years old.
The woman also provided detectives with the Uber trip receipt. The receipt showed the license plate of the vehicle, a picture of the driver, and his first name.
Officials contacted Uber, requested the driver’s information. They identified the suspect and obtained a warrant. Police said suspect Sonpreet Singh of Somerville turned himself in on April 18.
A spokesperson from Uber released a statement that reads, “What’s been reported is deeply troubling. The driver’s access to the app has been removed, and we thank local law enforcement for their swift action.”
Singh was arrested for indecent assault and battery on a person over the age of 14. He will be arraigned in Brighton District Court.
