WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been removed from his post, according to tweets from the president.
Tillerson will be replaced with Mike Pompeo, director of the CIA, President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.
Trump reportedly asked Tillerson to step aside Friday, according to the Washington Post.
The diplomat returned to Washington Monday after cutting short a trip to the continent of Africa.
Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!

Trump's tweet also announced Gina Haspel will lead the CIA after Pompeo moves into the state department.
