Retired Morton Hospital ICU nurse now a patient in the same unit

TAUNTON, Mass — Renee Blake’s family can’t wait for the day when she can laugh and giggle with her granddaughters once again.

“If anyone deserves a miracle, it’s our mom,” said Blake’s daughter, Allison Blake.

Blake’s mother is in the intensive care unit at Morton Hospital in Taunton. She’s been sick since July with liver failure, but her health got much worse around Christmas and last month she went into kidney failure.

“I don’t think she ever thought in a million years she’d ever be admitted as a patient there,” said Blake’s other daughter, Emily.

Blake spent 23 years working as a nurse in the ICU at Morton Hospital. She served on the frontline of some of the most critical patients, but now she needs help. Blake was recently put on a ventilator due to a sepsis infection that nearly took her life.

“We definitely sleep better at night knowing she’s in the same ICU she put two decades of her blood, sweat and tears in,” said Allison Blake.

To make things even more complicated, since Blake has been sick she hasn’t been able to keep up with her mortgage and her daughters say she’s in danger of losing her home, which she has lived in for 40 years.

“If we can’t save it, to be able to raise at least enough money to be able to get something for her so when she recovers and comes home she will have somewhere to come home to,” Allison Blake said.

The sisters have established a GoFundMe account to help with medical expenses and to find a place for their mother to live once she’s discharged from the hospital.
