Protestors gather after Mayor's comment on bicyclist and pedestrian safety

BOSTON — Protestors gathered Friday morning by City Hall in response to the Mayor’s comments regarding the personal safety of bicyclists and pedestrians.

Mayor Marty Walsh sparked backlash after saying cyclists and pedestrians need to help themselves by riding and walking responsibly.

Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalition is a group of people made up of nonprofits, businesses and civic organizations.

The group held a silent protest saying it is the city's responsibility to protect people on bikes and people who walk to and from work.

People in attendance wore all black for a silent moment of solidarity with the victims of traffic violence.

WalkBoston joined Vizion Zero in the protest.

Wendy Landman, Executive Director of WalkBoston, said this protest is about the people.

The mayor announced a $1 million dollar increase in funding for next year’s Vision Zero campaign.

The money will go towards the neighborhood slow streets program.

According to the Mayor, the goal is to have no pedestrian deaths next year.

He said everyone needs to play a role to make that happen.
