LEICESTER, Mass. — It may sound unusual, but for the second time in as many years the Leicester Police Department has had to chase a suspect making a break for freedom in a rowboat.
On Thursday, a Worcester man allegedly tried to break into a home on Greenville Pond around 10 a.m.
“This concerned citizen saw a man go around to the rear of a house on green street, go up a ladder, cut a screen on the second-floor window and hop in through the window,” Police Chief James Hurley said.

Officers arrived and spotted the suspect running out the back door and into the nearby woods. While running he allegedly dropped a backpack containing a wallet that had been stolen in Worcester and jewelry from the home he was fleeing.
He eventually made it to shore and hopped in a row boat hoping to escape capture.
“We surrounded the pond, gave the gentleman verbal commands that he was under arrest,” Hurley said.” He said ‘why you bothering me? I'm fishing.’”
Without another option, two officers borrowed kayaks, paddled out, and forced him toward dry land.
Once at shore, Thomas Millott was arrested on a number of charges including breaking and entering.
