Police identify 2 killed after truck goes into Charles River

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Two people died after their pickup truck crashed into the Charles River Saturday evening.

Around 6:45 p.m., the truck went through a guardrail on O'Brien Highway near Leverett Circle and into the Charles River near the Museum of Science. The vehicle landed on its side and quickly submerged; Boston Fire, Cambridge Fire, Boston EMS and State Police helped rescue the two people inside, a man and a woman.

Both people were taken to Mass General where they later died.

Sunday morning police identified the occupants of the truck as Brian Arcand, 36, of North Smithfield, R.I., and Rebecca Smith, 36, of Providence.

After the rescue, dive teams checked the water around the vehicle and then a tow truck pulled the vehicle out.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a crash between the truck and another vehicle is what caused the truck to go into the river. The people in the other vehicle were not injured.

Officials closed several streets around the area, including Leverett Circle and Storrow Drive, while they investigated.
