Police ask residents to be vigilant after reported home invasion in Ayer

AYER, Mass. — Ayer police are asking residents to be vigilant after they responded to a call for a home invasion early Sunday morning.

Neighbors told Boston 25 News that officers were gathering evidence at the East Main Street house for several hours on Sunday.

Nobody answered the door when a news crew knocked, but there were evidence markers with blood stains on the door.

"I was up around 5 a.m. I saw, I looked out the window and saw a whole bunch of cops lined up, state troopers, Ayer police," said neighbor Glen Malo.

Neighbors said they saw officers investigating outside the house from early morning until late afternoon.

"I saw there was marked and unmarked cruisers all up the road here and I just saw that police were in the house, they had crime scene tape," said Rob Fleming.

Police say they got a call for a possible home invasion, but they're still trying to determine if the allegation is true, and if there's a suspect on the run.

"They searched everywhere, they brought the K9 unit out, they searched around the building, they searched over in the woods here," Malo said.

Just to be cautious, police sent out an alert to neighbors to lock their doors and windows, just in case there is a suspicious person out there.

"It’s definitely out of the ordinary," Fleming said.

Neighbors are now hoping to learn more about what actually happened, and if everyone involved is OK.

"It’s concerning, of course, you know, I mean, you don’t expect something like that to happen here in Ayer, I mean it’s a pretty quiet town," Malo said.

Police said they're not sure if this was an isolated incident. If you live in the area and see anything suspicious, you should give police a call.
