PLYMOUTH, Mass. — In Plymouth County Superior Court, Lindsay Clancy calmly and clearly agreed to stipulate to certain facts in her closely watched triple murder trial.
Clancy is not changing her plea. Instead, she is agreeing to certain facts in an apparent effort to streamline what could be a lengthy trial involving more than 200 witnesses.
Clancy is accused of strangling her three young children with exercise bands in the basement of her Duxbury home after sending her husband, Patrick, out on an errand.
Her attorney argues that, at the time of the killings, Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis after spending weeks trying and failing to receive proper mental health treatment.
“This stipulation basically relieves the government of having to bring in dozens of witnesses to prove chain of custody of blood, fluids, the bands, DNA, all of that,” said Attorney Reddington.
“Rather than have days of testimony, this stipulation will avoid that.”
During the sixth day of testimony, a Massachusetts State Police bloodstain pattern expert described blood evidence found throughout the Clancy home, prompting questions about whether stains discovered on a second-floor bedroom window provided any insight into Clancy’s alleged suicide attempt.
“Could it also be from someone hanging out the window holding onto those spots?” Attorney Jennifer Sprague said.
“Correct.”
“If somebody was going to climb out the window and hang on the ledge, and then what like do a Spiderman and go down the side of the shingles, they would leave a smear going all the way down in the shingles wouldn’t they,” Reddington said.
“If they came in contact the entire way down, yes there would be a transfer all the way down,” the expert said.
