'Pink washing' scam reported in New England during Breast Cancer Awareness month

Millions of dollars will be donated this month for Breast Cancer Awareness. But as it turns out, not all "pink" products are what they seem.

The Better Business Bureau says it's gotten more than two dozen reports of a new scam called "pink washing."

According to Paula Flemming, a BBB spokesperson, scammers will call or send an email to someone, saying if they give their credit card, they'll get a gift - like a water bottle - in return.

Flemming says there's a few ways to avoid being duped by donating to fake charities.

When fundraising items are legitimate, they will often list the name of the charity on the packaging.

Flemming also suggests people should research an organization if they're skeptical about its validity.

The BBB also has a "scam tracker" tool where anyone can research and report potential scams.
