LAWRENCE, Mass. — Police are investigating after a 49-year-old man from Haverhill was fatally hit by a train in Lawrence on Friday morning.
According to the MBTA, the man was 1,000 feet from the Lawrence train station off of Merrimack Street when struck. He was sitting on a platform next to the tracks as the train approached the station.
According to the office of Essex County DA, the train operator blew his whistle and used his emergency brakes to try to avoid the man.
The man's legs were clipped, the DA's office said.
The MBTA tweeted updates for commuter train passengers following the accident.
