NH man dies trying to save son in boating accident

A father from New Hampshire died while trying to save his son during a boating accident.

According to police, 51 year old Allen Lighthall of Milford, New Hampshire died after the boat he was operating struck a submerged rock.

Lighthall's son, 13 year old Scott Lighthall, and brother, 53 year old Edward Lighthall were passengers in the craft.

They were boating on unfamiliar waters in Black Lake, NY.

Police said the teenager was thrown from the bow when the boat struck the rock.

His father entered the water to save the boy, but police said neither of them "could sustain themselves and succumbed to the water."

The teen was unconscious when he was rescued by another boater and was taken to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

Allen Lighthall's body was later found by the Lisbon Fire Department Dive Team.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, police said.

Troopers said Edward Lighthall suffered minor lacerations and was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg for treatment.

The accident happened around 8 a.m.

No one on the boat was wearing a life jacket.
