Newton opposition aims to stop gun shop from opening

NEWTON, Mass. — Widespread opposition across the community of Newton is aiming to prevent a gun shop from opening on busy Washington Street.

Residents had their first opportunity to weigh in on the controversy during a public hearing on Monday night. Dozens of people signed up to speak on the issue, and each had two minutes to share their thoughts.

Many who testified were strongly against what would be the first gun shop to open in Newton in decades. There were also people who testified in support of the gun shop opening at 709 Washington St.

“There’s nothing against the law about selling firearms. I don’t see a problem with it as long as it’s complying with the law,” said Tim Fulton.

More than 9,000 people have signed a petition to stop Newton Firearms LLC from opening up shop.

“I don’t see any good that can come from it. My daughters will walk by here on their way to school every morning,” said Jacob Hesterman.

Newton’s Inspectional Services Department has issued a stop-work order against the business. According to a city spokesperson, inspectors found workers inside performing renovations without a permit

Before things move any further, the City Council is proposing immediate changes to regulate where firearms can be sold in Newton. The City Council is hoping to vote on the proposed zoning changes as soon as next week.

“The City’s attorneys are advising us regarding how the City can regulate gun sales while being mindful of the Second Amendment to the Constitution,” explained a statement from Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller.
