NEWMARKET, N.H. -- Security changes are being made at Newmarket Elementary School after a kindergartner left the building Thursday completely unnoticed, walking all the way home alone.
It wasn't until the child made it to their house two miles away, that anyone noticed what had happened.
While the superintendent sent a letter home to parents informing them of the situation - faculty members met last Wednesday in order to discuss and improve procedures. A Safety and Emergency Committee meeting was also held on Monday.
“Yesterday’s incident was extremely worrying for all of us--as parents and as staff members responsible for the well-being of children. We are all so grateful that the child arrived home safely and unharmed… While we are confident that no individual employee involved in the situation acted inappropriately or engaged in a practice that differed from the practices that have been in place for years, this situation has helped us to identify practices that need to be changed,” said Superintendent Meredith Nadeau.
Those changes include adults taking note anytime a child travels between locations, and attendance taken every single class period. Physical upgrades to the building are also in the works, and will now be accelerated.
