Claire Gravel's death still unsolved, 30 years later

SALEM, Mass. — Thirty years after her death, the case of Claire Gravel is still a mystery, but it’s not a cold case.

At 20 years old, Claire Gravel had her entire life ahead of her. But on June 30, 1986 Claire’s body was discovered in woods off Route 128 in Beverly.

There has never been an arrest, but authorities say they have some new information.

Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said the recently uncovered information is keeping Claire’s case from going cold.

“A couple years ago we got some new information which we are working on diligently and we met about the case recently. I have two senior assistant district attorneys who are working on this case along with me,” he said.

In the hours before she was murdered, Gravel played softball, and then went to Major Magleashes' bar with her teammates on Washington Street in Salem.

The bar owner recalled to FOX25’s Bob Ward that it was a regular Saturday night, and Gravel didn't seem to be having a problem with anyone.

What remains unknown is what happened after Gravel left the bar

There have been conflicting stories over the years about who she was with, and whether she got into a car.

Blodgett wouldn’t discuss possible scenarios, but he said he's encouraged that Gravel's case may still be solved.

“It's just taking us into a direction that will hopefully result in justice for Claire and her family,” he said.
