New Boston Dynamics robot on wheels can jump, use stairs

WALTHAM, Mass. — When the robots come, they will have wheels. At least that seems to be the idea behind Boston Dynamics’ new robot Handle.

In a video posted to YouTube Tuesday, Handle is shown rolling back and forth while balancing, moving over ramps, picking up objects and even jumping over a barrier.

According to Boston Dynamics, Handle stands 6’6” and has a vertical leap of four feet (48 inches). To put that LeBron James stands 6’8” and has a vertical leap of about 40 inches.

In addition to the wheels, Handle is built with feet that allow it to maneuver across many different types of surfaces.

“It uses electric power to operate both electric and hydraulic actuators, with a range of about 15 miles on one battery charge,” Boston Dynamics said.

Previously, Boston Dynamics has designed a bipedal robot called Atlas that walks on two legs and can get up after being knocked over. They've also created a dog-like robot called Spot that they have shown dressed as a reindeer and going toe-to-toe with another dog.
