New bill could limit how law enforcement can use drones

BOSTON — A new bill could limit the way law enforcement uses drones in order to protect people's privacy.

The proposed bill filed on Beacon Hill would require law enforcement to get a warrant or show proof of a credible terror threat or danger to life.

It would also limit how long video captured by police can be kept unless it contains evidence.

The bill also bans the weaponization of drones, and makes them illegal to use for collecting surveillance without a person's permission.

The proposed legislation in the house is similar to one proposed by two state senators last year.
