New Bedford police officer shot while executing search warrant

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A New Bedford police officer was shot Friday night while executing a search warrant at an apartment on Davis Street.

Officials say the officer,

was shot on the side of his chest and transported to St. Luke's and then to Rhode Island Hospital. The injuries were not life threatening and he was released Saturday.

Lagoa was working alongside members of the Organized Crime and Intelligence Bureau at the time of the incident. The group was attempting to open a door when they found it was barricaded with a security bar.

The officers were fired upon by someone inside the apartment immediately after hitting the door.

The officers retreated and a brief standoff ensued. A short time later, the suspects agreed to open the door. Five people were taken into custody.

Neighbors were concerned after the incident and feared for their safety.

Torrie Vieira who lives in the neighborhood said,  "I heard a bunch of like muffling, like gunshots are loud, I've heard them before but not like that. It was scary to hear them that close to my house."

Another neighbor said, "[I'm] Scared. Because if they can shoot a cop, they can shoot anybody."

Two men, Nathan Manuel-Jackson, 20, of New Bedford, and Thomas Scott, 34, of Mattapan, were charged in the incident.

Manuel-Jackson is charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm within 500-feet of a dwelling. Scott is charged with accessory after the fact and a firearm violation with one prior violent or drug crime.

Both men are also charged with unlawful carrying of a firearm and unlawful carrying of a loaded firearm. Three others were issued grand jury subpoenas.
