BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com)— MIT student Matt Guthmiller cut out a day of sightseeing in Cairo to take care of urgent maintenance on his airplane this week.
Guthmiller was set for a full day of sightseeing when he arrived in Cairo on June 18. However, a faulty voltage regulator had to be replaced at the Cairo international airport before he could continue his journey.
The small setback did not prevent Guthmiller from sightseeing the next day. He continued to Aswan, Abu Dhabi where he experienced another setback after filling his engine with Diesel fuel instead of Avgas.
The 19-year-old pilot moved past these minor delays and landed in Nagpur, India on Thursday. He is expected to land in Darwin, Australia on June 30.
Guthmiller wants to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the world on a solo flight. He departed on May 31 and has since traveled to the Azores, Newfoundland, London, Rome, and Athens.
His trip is expected to end in mid-July when he lands back in his hometown in Aberdeen, SD. Proceeds from his project will be donated to Code. org, a non-profit working to expand computer science education in schools.
