Methuen Police searching for suspect in Market Basket robbery

METHUEN, Mass. — Police are looking to identify a suspect wanted for robbing a Market Basket in Methuen.

At around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, surveillance cameras caught a man who walked into the Market Basket store at 70 Pleasant Valley Street and may have been armed.

“This is a very brazen armed robbery, not something we typically see in Methuen," said Methuen Police Captain Gregory Gallant.

Gallant says the suspect first walked into the store and picked up some diapers. He then walked up to the service desk and began to demand money from the cash register and threatened to shoot the cashier if she didn't comply.

"He did mention he was going to shoot if there was some sort of non-cooperation, but it was difficult to see if he actually had a gun because it was so closely between his hands," said Gallant.

The cashier told police she handed over the money and the suspect ran off.

"It's a bit strange that he stayed in the store with his face fully masked and gloves on," said Gallant. "Typically you're not going to see something so brazen with so many people around, that's what makes it not just something we don't see everyday but also so dangerous."

Although its hard to see from the surveillance video, the suspect is described as Hispanic, about 5'5" with wavy brown hair and was last seen wearing blue jeans, dark sneakers, a light blue hoodie and a white brimmed baseball cap.

In an effort to cover his face, the suspect was also wearing a black and green striped face warmer.

Police are looking for any information that may lead to this arrest. If you have any information, please contact Methuen Police.
