Medical examiner: Boston firefighters died of smoke inhalation, thermal injuries

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner released the cause and manner of death for two Boston firefighters who died while fighting a blaze on Beacon Street in March.

Lt. Edward Walsh and firefighter Michael Kennedy died as a result of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. Their deaths have been ruled an accident.

Walsh and Kennedy died while responding to a 9-alarm fire at 298 Beacon Street. Investigators allege the fire was sparked by welding work being done next door. Fire officials said sparks from the work likely got underneath the shingles of the building and festered there for a while, causing a fire to ignite.
