MBTA's Government Center stop back in business after 2 years

BOSTON — Passengers on the MBTA Green and Blue lines can once again get on and off trains at the Government Center Station.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker and Democratic Boston Mayor Marty Walsh were among participants in a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday as the station on City Hall Plaza reopened after a two-year reconstruction.

Baker says the project was completed on time and under its original $90 million budget.

Subway trains continued to pass through the station but did not stop there during the refurbishing.

The station sports a new glass-covered main opening. Officials say it's now fully accessible to disabled riders.

The station's long history dates back to 1898, when it opened as the Scollay Square Station. It was the third stop on the nation's first subway system.
