If you have holiday plans this Labor Day weekend and are planning to travel early, your commute just opened up.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said it’s expecting heavier traffic on the already-congested highways this weekend, and to help alleviate some frustration, is opening the Southeast Expressway’s HOV lane earlier than normal.
The southbound HOV lane on I-93 will open on Thursday at 2 p.m. and on Friday at 1 p.m. to help traffic move along to Cape Cod and other popular getaways.
Massachusetts will also pause road work outside of fixed work zones on Friday starting at 5 a.m, clearing the roads of construction vehicles and workers until Tuesday early morning.
Roughly 40% of Bay State residents surveyed by AAA said they will travel 100 to 500 miles this weekend, 85% of them by car.
MassDOT advised travelers to use its traffic website www.Mass511.com to find the best time to drive.
