Mass. gas prices jump 12 cents in one day

BOSTON, Mass. — Massachusetts average gas price is up 12 cents from just Saturday averaging over $4.00 per gallon. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is adding to the pain at the pump as prices climb higher and higher each day.

According to AAA, Friday’s price is the highest since October 2012 and the highest one-week jump since September of 2017. The price is 66 cents higher than a month ago which sat at $3.41, and $1.39 higher than March 6, 2021, which was $2.68 per gallon.

“The price of crude oil started today over $111 per barrel due to the invasion of Ukraine, and will likely increase with continuing conflict,” says Mary Maguire, Director of Public/Government Affairs. “Improving weather will lead to more driving, increased gasoline demand, and higher prices. Pain at the pump could continue for weeks or months to come.”

“It’s ridiculous, I mean there’s no other word for it,” said Lucy Collins, who lives on Cape Cod.

Drivers say they’re paying about $20 more than usual to fill up the tank.

“I think we need some intervention from Congress or from the president,” said Milton Bennings in Canton. “I mean I know it has a lot to do with the war that’s going on in Ukraine, but it’s getting to the point where people are not even able to get around.”

Bennings says luckily he can work from home, but now he’s trying to drive less often.

“It’s unfortunate because the weather is getting nicer and they want to get out and travel and stuff,” said Collins. “It’s just the worst time to have such high gas prices, but everything’s gone up in price too.”

Drivers are now worried about how much worse this can get.

AAA warns that prices will continue to head north in the coming weeks.
