Man survives nearly four hours in garbage truck

By Rick Couri

SACRAMENTO, Ca (MyFoxBoston.com) — A California man is lucky to be alive after his searching for his wallet inside a large trash bin led to a him being dropped inside a garbage truck, where he survived for a remarkable four hours as the blades inside the truck never compacted the trash.

"He's very lucky to be alive," Lt. Martin Torres told OrovilleMRnews.

The trash trespasser caught a break when the truck that scooped him up was not full. "The trucks use pressure to compact the trash," Torres pointed out. However, the compacter was never used, or "he could have been squashed."

The danger didn't end when the garbage was dumped. A bulldozer is normally used to spread and flatten the loads but Torres said, "the driver saw the man crawl out of his trash pile." The bulldozer operator stopped keeping the man from being "run over and killed."

Torres said the man, who called the truck "a coffin," was checked a Sacramento hospital for back and neck pain.
