Maine man's death is first fatal crash involving a moose of 2018

A moose trotted across a Wyoming highway with an American flag wrapped around its antlers.

MEDWAY, Maine — State Police in Maine said the first fatal car crash involving a moose in the state this year happened Friday night along I-95 in Medway.

The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Donnie Wilcox of Winslow.

According to police, Wilcox's Subaru hit a bull moose in the southbound travel lane, just two miles south of the Medway exit at about 10 p.m.

Upon impact, the moose flew into the windshield and peeled the back of the car's roof.

The car was found by passersby shortly after it happened, but police say there were no witnesses at the time of the accident.

Both Wilcox and the moose died on scene.
