BOSTON — A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of Massachusetts through Tuesday night due to a weather system that is expected to dump more snow on top of what fell overnight and during the early morning hours.

During the late morning and afternoon hours, additional snow accumulations of a coating to up to 2 inches is possible across the state before freezing drizzle takes over.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute,” the National Weather Service said.

The advisory is in effect for Eastern Franklin, Eastern Hampden, Eastern Hampshire, Northern Worcester, Northwest Middlesex, Southern Worcester, Western Franklin, Western Hampden, Western Hampshire, Barnstable, Central Middlesex, Dukes, Eastern Essex, Eastern Norfolk, Eastern Plymouth, Nantucket, Northern Bristol, Southeast Middlesex, Southern Bristol, Southern Plymouth, Suffolk, Western Essex, Western Norfolk, Western Plymouth, Northern Berkshire, and Southern Berkshire until 7 p.m., according to the NWS.

In parts of Western Massachusetts, up to 12 inches of snow is possible by the time the storm wraps. Snow totals will vary based on elevation with the highest totals expected above 1,500 feet. Plowable snow is also on tap for parts of Central and Eastern Massachusetts, where 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected in total.

Boston, the North Shore, Southeastern Massachusetts, and Cape Cod and the Islands are under a winter weather advisory. Anywhere between a coating to 4 inches of snow is expected in total in those areas. Winds will also gust as high as 35 mph.

The snow in Eastern Massachusetts will diminish in intensity Tuesday afternoon and may even mix with or change to rain near the coast.

The wintry precipitation is expected to be totally moved out to sea between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. Wednesday.

There is a chance for two additional storms later in the week, with rain and gusty winds on Thursday. A bigger storm could be brewing Friday into Saturday with a wintry mix.
