Westford police officer’s actions avert “disaster” at gas pump

WESTFORD, Mass. — A quick-thinking, and fast-moving Westford police officer is credited with averting a “much larger disaster” after an SUV caught fire at a gas pump.

It happened Thursday morning a the Haffner’s Gas Station at Littleton Road at Boston Road.

Officer Derek Hartley arrived within 30 seconds of the call, according to a post by the Westford Police Department and grabbed a fire extinguisher before fire crews arrived.

Hartley “was able to quickly extinguish the flames, averting a much larger disaster and dangerous situation from unfolding,” according to the post.
