The town of Winthrop announced Wednesday that they have joined the MBTA’s Youth Pass Program.
The MBTA’s Youth Pass program offers reduced fares to young adults with low incomes. The cards can be loaded with cash value for roughly 50 percent reduced one-way fares, or $10 7-day and $30 monthly LinkPasses. Youth Pass cards can also be used to purchase half-price one-way fares and monthly passes for the Commuter Rail, Express Bus, and ferry.
“Winthrop is excited to join this program and offer this valuable service to our eligible youth,” said Winthrop Town Manager Tony Marino in a statement. “Having this service makes it easier for our young people to get to work and other programs offered in the surrounding Cities and Towns. Special thanks to the MBTA and all involved for making this a reality!”
“We’re excited to see Winthrop partner with us on the Youth Pass program, and join our growing list of participating municipal partners in offering the Youth Pass’s benefits to so many eligible young people,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “The Youth Pass provides discounted fares to eligible young people with half-off one-way fares and monthly passes for just $30. Better access to transit is a critical component in increasing broad access to jobs and educational opportunities, and we’re so glad to see this option now provided to young adults in the Winthrop community.”
In order for an individual to qualify for a Youth Pass, they must live in one of the participating towns or cities, be between 18 and 25 years old and enrolled in one of the Youth Pass partner programs such as alternative education programming, job training or professional development. Additionally, a individual can be between 12 and 17 years and not enrolled in middle school or high school.
