NEWPORT, R.I. — A fast-moving fire spread through a hotel in Newport, R.I. Monday night.
Three firefighters were injured battling the blaze, which began shortly before 8 p.m. at the Wayfinder Hotel on Admiral Kalbfus Road. Two firefighters sustained shoulder injuries and another needed stitches in his leg, Newport Deputy Fire Chief Mark Riding said.
Firefighters arrived at the hotel to find flames coming from the front of the building between the first and second floors. The fire moved quickly through void spaces between floors, making it difficult to access, according to Riding.
The building had been evacuated by hotel management.
The fire went to four alarms. Crews from a dozen nearby communities provided assistance.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
