GROTON, Mass. — Hundreds out students at a school in Groton called out Friday with a mysterious stomach illness, according to the town’s superintendent.
A total of 200 out of 543 students at the Florence Roche Elementary School were absent due to “some sort of unknown” stomach illness, Groton Superintendent of Schools Laura Chesson said.
Administrators learned of a possible sickness going through the school late Thursday, Chesson added.
The town’s board of health has been notified and crews were called in to clean the school.
There is no evidence indicating the sickness was caused by cafeteria food and it wasn’t immediately clear what type of virus was affecting the kids, according to school officials.
Classes were slated to be dismissed for the weekend at 12:15 p.m.
An investigation remains ongoing.
