Summer businesses on the Cape trying to dodge rain drops

SANDWICH, Mass. — The summer kicked off with so much potential – with some of the best weather on a Memorial Day weekend in years. But soon after many agree it went south quickly. Rain, wind, overcast, and tornados. Everything is coming through.

It’s the summer of double-checking the forecast. “We’ve been dodging storms,” said a mother. The Noonans are taking cover today at Heritage Museums & Gardens. The President and CEO, Anne Scott-Putney, says they have been very busy this summer. “Heritage is a place you can come no matter what the weather,” said Scott-Putney. Even during severe weather. Heritage helped shelter these visitors when Tuesday’s severe weather came through.

The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Paul Niedzwiecki says business and occupancy is down from the last two years but some of the indoor businesses are seeing a bump.

“On the Cape, there is a lot of things to do when it is not a beach day,” said Niedzwiecki. “We’ve lived on this peninsula in the middle of the Atlantic for a long time so they are very adaptable.”

Wish Gift Co in Sandwich has been busy with shoppers while the outdoor dining next door has been quieter. But the owner, Penny Sampson, says severe weather changes that.

“It was very busy in here and then boom the weather happened and it was gone,” said Sampson.

There has been one silver lining. because the whale activity has been so good, Captain John Boats manager Jaime Shortall, says their whale watches have been booming.

“The sightings have been unreal, and I think people like to go out when it is a little bit of an overcast,” said Shortall.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
