Traffic alert: Sumner Tunnel to remain open for upcoming weekend

BOSTON, Mass. — Officials announced on Friday the Sumner Tunnel will remain open for normal use through the upcoming weekend.

According to MassDOT, planned construction work on the tunnel will be suspended beginning June 24 at 11:00 p.m. through Monday, June 27 at 5:00 a.m.

The decision comes in response to traffic delays caused by the suspension of Orange and Green Line services at Haymarket Station, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation said.

Structural concerns from deteriorated columns that support the Government Center Garage caused chaos on the Thursday evening commute.

Officials are reminding the public recent problems at a construction site near Haymarket Station have had no impact on the Sumner Tunnel’s structural integrity, and the tunnel is safe to use.
