Stunning drone video shows humpback whale enjoying sunrise in Boston Harbor

BOSTON — Stunning drone video showed a gigantic humpback whale enjoying the sunrise in Boston Harbor over the weekend.

Video captured by photographer Charlie Nutting and shared with Boston 25 News showed the whale floating along at a leisurely pace around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.

In an Instagram post, Nutting wrote, “Humpbacks usually sleep by floating motionless up to 30 mins at a time. This one wasn’t motionless but it was definitely pre-coffee.”

Nutting told Boston 25 that he observed at least two other whales in the area during the course of the morning.

Whales have been gathering this summer off Plymouth, where they have been feeding. Federal and local officials urged boaters last week to steer clear of the whales following a slew of close encounters.

Many viral videos of encounters with whales have emerged in recent days, including one taken by a boater that showed a breaching whale landing on a boat.

Officials asked boaters to stay at least 100 yards away from whales whenever possible, limit observing time to 30 minutes, refrain from trapping whales between their boat and the shore, respect the space between the mother and her calves, and to stay away from food sources.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
