CAPE CANAVERAL, FL — Saturday, January 28 marks the 37th anniversary of Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy.

The Space Shuttle Challenger was scheduled for a routine launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida on January 28, 1986.

The shuttle exploded after just 73 seconds in flight, killing all seven Americans on board.

New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe was one of the seven crew members killed in the disaster.

McAuliffe was a social studies teacher chosen by NASA to be the first teacher in space.

The shuttle took off just before noon from the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Americans watched from the ground below and on TVs across the country. Many of them were schoolchildren, who had high interest in the launch because of McAuliffe.

Crew members Dick Scobee, Mike Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik and Gregory Jarvis also died.
