Record high: Mass. gas prices are now $1.69 higher than a year ago

BOSTON — The meteoric rise of gas prices in Massachusetts shows no sign of slowing down.

Regular unleaded gas is now at a new record high of $4.60 a gallon - up 21 cents since last Monday and $1.69 higher than a year ago at this time., according to AAA.

Diesel fuel keeps setting new records too. The average cost of diesel in Massachusetts is now $6.38 - a 108% jump over last year.

The state also continues to pace ahead of national prices. The average price for regular gas nationwide is $4.48.

“The high cost of crude oil, the key ingredient in gasoline, continues to push up pump prices dramatically for consumers,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast Director of Public and Government Affairs. “Even the annual seasonal demand dip for gasoline that we typically see between spring break and Memorial Day--which would normally help lower prices--is having no effect this year.”
