CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Massachusetts State Police are investigating after a 23-year-old Lowell woman was killed when another driver lost control of their car, went airborne across the opposite side of the highway, and struck her car.
According to State Police, the Lowell woman was driving a 2018 Subaru Impreza on the southbound side of 495 shortly after 1pm. Police say a northbound 2010 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 29-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire man lost control, crossed all lanes, and struck the guardrail. The Chevrolet then flew through the air, and landed on the southbound side of 495, striking the Subaru. Police do not yet know why the driver of the Chevrolet lost control.
The driver of the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 25-year-old Lowell woman, was also seriously injured.
The Manchester man driving the Chevy sustained serious injuries as well.
Due to the severity of the injuries, a medflight was called in and transported both of the seriously wounded individuals to Lahey Clinic. Traffic on the highway was shut down for 15 minutes for the helicopter.
MSP are still investigating the crash.
