TYNGSBORO, Mass. — An investigation is underway following a deadly crash involving a car and garbage truck in Tyngsboro Friday afternoon, police said.

Police said Westford Road was closed from the Sportsman’s Club near Route 3 to the intersection of Middlesex Road, which is Route 3A, because of the crash.

Around 1 p.m. Tyngsborough Police was contacted by a caller to conduct a well-being check on a resident of the town. The responding officers observed a red Toyota Corolla being driven away from the residence at a high rate of speed.

According to officers, when they attempted to stop the car the driver of the vehicle allegedly drove off at a high rate of speed, made a right onto Westford Road, crossed the center line, and subsequently struck a garbage truck head-on.

The operator of the Toyota Corolla was pronounced dead on the scene, officers said. The driver of the garbage truck was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges have been filed and no additional information is being released at this time.
