HANSON, Mass. — A team of large animal specialists rescued a horse that was stuck in the mud in Hanson Tuesday afternoon, Hanson Fire Chief Jerome Thompson said.
The horse, 13-year-old Libby, got stuck just before 2 p.m. in the Burrage Pond Wildlife Management Area area off of Elm Street.
Libby’s owner was riding the animal at the time. The owner called for help on her cell phone. The dispatcher was able to pinpoint her exact location using GPS, which helped firefighters get to her quickly.
Thompson said his department called the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team’s large animal specialists to the scene. He described them as “specially trained firefighters from departments within Plymouth County as well as veterinarians.”

Libby’s owner suffered minor injuries, but stayed on scene for the duration of the rescue.
The team was able to free Libby from the mud within an hour. She also had minor injuries.
“This is a prime example of how important mutual aid is for major incidents,” Thompson said. “It also reinforces that the [Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team] is a valuable resource for departments in the county when specialized skills are required to mitigate emergency situations.”
