Dash camera video shows suspected repeat drunk driver failing to stop for Hingham Police

HINGHAM, Mass. — Newly-released Hingham police dash camera video shows a repeat drunk driver failing to stop for an officer earlier this month.

The video was captured on September 10 around 3 p.m.

Police said they were conducting speed enforcement on Free Street in response to complaints from residents when the driver of the SUV passed them going 48-miles-per-hour in the 30-mile-per-hour zone.

“The driver did not pull over despite the cruiser behind him with lights and siren on,” police said.

The driver continued onto Union Street and crossed over the center line four times. He continued past Wompatuck State Park and Hingham High School at a low speed. He then blew through the stop sign at the intersection of Union, Pleasant and Middle streets.

Police said the driver eventually slowed to 20 or 30-miles-per-hour on Middle Street and the officer was able to pull beside him and box him in.

“The driver had bloodshot and glassy eyes and smelled of an alcoholic beverage,” police said. “He was unsteady on his feet and swayed while standing.”

After a series of field sobriety tests, police arrested David McLean, 43, of Scituate.

McLean was arraigned at Hingham District Court on September 11 on the following charges: operating under the influence of alcohol (third offense), negligent operation, failure to stop for police, marked lanes violation and a stop sign violation.

Police said McLean’s previous two offenses were in 1995 and 2017.

Police said the dash camera video shows how dangerous driving while impaired can be and is a reminder drunk drivers can be on the road at any time of day.
