Pint-sized players pack Fenway for Little League Opening Day

BOSTON — Hundreds of young baseball players from across Massachusetts packed Fenway Park Saturday for the annual Little League Opening Day event.

The young ball players were able to walk the warning track, take photos in the dugouts, and play catch in the outfield.

“I’ve been a Red Sox fan for like 60 years and I’ve never been on the field so this is really something,” said Rick Newman who drove down from New Hampshire to spend the day with his grandchildren from Somerville. “I remember my first time at Fenway Park, it was probably almost 60 years ago, so I’m sure they’ll have memories of this that’ll last a lifetime.”

The pint-sized players were given free Fenway franks, soft baseballs to throw around, and other fun souvenirs.

“I think it’s great,” Newman said. “It gets kids interested in baseball and it’s perfect for them.” The four World Series trophies were on display for photos, along with mascots Wally and Tessie.

In total, some 900 children participated in the fun-filled day.

“We’ve never been out here so it’s really cool,” said sisters Jade and Jasmine Tsang who were visiting family friends from New Jersey. “It’s fun!”
