MARTHA'S VINEYARD — The pilot of a small airplane that crashed on Martha’s Vineyard last week has died in the hospital, the Cape and Island’s District Attorney said Friday.
Randolph Bonnist, 79, of Norwalk, Connecticut passed away at Boston Medical Center Thursday night, according to District Attorney Robert J. Galibois.
Bonnist and his wife, Robin Bonnist, were attempting to land a single-engine Piper 46 at Martha’s Vineyard Airport on July 15. Randolph suffered a medical emergency during the process, prompting his wife to grab the controls.
The plane suffered a hard landing, causing the plane’s left wing to break in half.
Robin Bonnist was uninjured in the crash.
Foul play is not suspected, the DA’s office says.
The crash is under investigation by the FAA and NTSB.
According to FlightAware, at least one plane originally scheduled to land on the island was routed to Boston instead.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
