PEPPERELL, Mass. — A microburst went through Pepperell during last Friday’s storm, the National Weather Service confirmed on Tuesday.
According to reports from the NWS, a microburst with estimated winds of 90 to 100 mph produced significant damage to trees and homes in a small part of the town. Due to the severe weather, large trees were uprooted and downed on houses and on roads.
The NWS notes the damage was determined to be from a microburst and not a tornado because of the straight-line winds. A microburst is a narrow downburst of air from a thunderstorm with a damage swath of 2.5 miles or less.
Winds of up to 100 mph were recorded in the Pepperell area on May 15, 2020.
Severe weather impacted the state on Friday night, leaving many without power and extensive damage across many parts of the area.
Tornado watches and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, but no tornadoes were registered by the NWS. A tornado warning was also issued for southwest New Hampshire.
No injuries were reported due to the storm.
