Norwell police officer alerts sleeping family to fire after noticing smoke, flames coming from home

NORWELL, Mass. — A police officer is being credited with saving a family from an overnight house fire after he noticed smoke coming from a home while he was patrolling the area.

Norwell police said Officer Joseph Esposito saw smoke coming from the garage and breezeway of a home on River Street around 12:39 a.m. while he was driving around the area on patrol. Esposito saw flames coming from the roof of the home and banged on the door to wake the sleeping residents.

Two adults, three young children and a pet were able to flee the home, which Norwell fire later determined likely started in the attic space above where two of the children were sleeping and then spread.

Acting Police Chief Carol A. Brzuszek said in a statement “It is without question that Officer Esposito’s actions allowed this family to escape their home without serious injury or the loss of life.” “We are extremely proud of the heroic actions of Officer Esposito.”

This is the second time a local police officer has alerted sleeping residents to a fire just this week. On Tuesday, an off-duty North Reading police officer helped three people escape an overnight fire on Lowell Road.
