New flash flood warning issued for southeastern Massachusetts

BOSTON — We’re on a SEVERE WEATHER ALERT from the Boston 25 Weather Team due to a flash flood warning in southeastern Massachusetts.

The warning is in effect for Central Bristol and West Central Plymouth counties until 3 p.m.

In the warning, the National Weather Service wrote, “Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.”

Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas, is possible, according to the NWS.

“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,” the NWS warned. “Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.”

Impacted areas include Fall River, Taunton, Dartmouth, Swansea, Raynham, Rehoboth, Lakeville, Freetown, Dighton and Berkley.

This warning comes after drenching rain left roads impassable with floodwaters in western and central Massachusetts earlier in the morning.
