MEDFORD, Mass. — A National Grid worker has died and three Medford Police Officers were rushed to the hospital following an incident at a worksite early Thursday morning, according to Medford police.
The incident happened just outside the Fellsway West Condo complex on Salem Street.
According to National Grid, it was around 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning when an employee was injured while performing underground work.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the utility company said, “With great sadness we can confirm that early this morning a National Grid electric employee died after sustaining injuries on the job while working in Medford. Our immediate priority is ensuring we are doing everything we can to support this employee’s family and colleagues. We, therefore, will not be sharing any additional information at this time.”
The Middlesex District Attorney’s office says a 35-year-old man was working alone in an electrical box located at the end of the parking lot when he was electrocuted.
Medford police say the officer who was working a detail at this job site immediately called for extra help. Two more officers arrived and all three began to render aid.
The National Grid worker and three officers were all taken to Mass General Hospital. Police say the worker succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. The three officers have since been released from the hospital.
State police, OSHA, and National Grid are all investigating.
Salem Street is open to traffic, but the parking lot of the condo complex will be closed as the investigation continues.
