Allegation of misconduct with a minor at Winchester summer program prompts police investigation

WINCHESTER, Mass. — Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating after a former employee of a town-run summer program was recently accused of misconduct with a juvenile.

In a letter sent home to parents, Town Manager Beth Rudolph says a temporary employee of the town who worked at the Summer Adventure Program in 2021 and 2022 allegedly made inappropriate contact with a minor. The summer program is run by the Winchester Recreation Department and was located at the Lynch Elementary School. The employee in question hasn’t worked for the town since August 2022, according to officials.

“The care and safety of children participating in our Recreation Department’s programs is of utmost importance to the Town, and we respect the trust that you place in us when caring for your children,” Rudolph said in a statement.

Both Winchester Police and DCF are investigating the alleged incident as well as the Middlesex DA’s Office to see if further action is required. Town officials say as soon as they became aware of the allegation, they alerted the proper authorities. They also say an independent review of policies, procedures and hiring practices for the recreation department and its programs is ongoing.

“I understand that this news will be unsettling for families to hear,” Rudolph said, “However, I do want to note that this incident is not related to the investigation of a Winchester resident on child pornography charges that was reported publicly last week by the United States Attorney’s Office.”

The former Summer Adventure Program employee’s name has not been released and no arrests have been made, as the investigation is still ongoing, according to police.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about this matter to call 781-729-0238.
