BOSTON — MassDOT officials provided a second tour of the Sumner Tunnel project as the restoration enters its fourth week.
Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver and other project managers brought news outlets inside the construction site on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials pointed out the tedious process underway of installing over 750 arches.
The installation of those arches started in the middle of the tunnel and is expanding out to both the East Boston and North End sides of the tunnel.
The project also includes work on the roadway, the walls, lighting, and making additional improvements that MassDOT says will increase safety and climate resiliency.
Boston 25 News asked if there’s any chance of the tunnel remaining closed after August 31st.
“I’m gonna say no,” said John McInerney, District 6 Highway Director. “We’re about at 33 percent of our target which is pretty much in line.”
According to MassDOT, the project’s contract has a design life of about 50 years.
The last time the Sumner Tunnel received an upgrade was back in the 90s.
