BARNSTABLE, Mass. — A 31-year-old man was rushed to a trauma center by helicopter after suffering a severe boating injury in Barnstable Harbor.
Investigators say a propeller from a running boat engine cut the man’s leg.
The man’s injuries are considered life-threatening. Someone else on the boat had applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg before rescuers arrived, according to the Barnstable Fire Department.
It happened around 5:15 p.m. Sunday. Once on shore, an ambulance rushed the injured man to a waiting medical helicopter and he was flown to Rhode Island Hospital.
The incident is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Environmental Police.
“The Barnstable Fire Department would like to reinforce the importance of wearing a personal floatation device when using watercraft, as well as the importance of training in bleeding control and tourniquet use,” according to a statement from the department.
The fire department urged people to visit Stopthebleed.org to find a local training class.
