Man killed in Chelmsford crash involving DPW front-end loader owned by town, police say

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — One person was killed following a crash involving a pickup truck and a front-end loader driven by a Chelmsford Department of Public Works employee, police said.

Police responded to a call for a serious motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Graniteville Road and School Street around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Police Chief James Spinney said in a statement.

When officers arrived, they saw a pickup truck that had collided with a front-end loader, owned by the town, that was being driven down the road.

A man driving the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the front-end loader, a DPW worker who was clearing debris from the storm, was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital. His current condition was unknown late Tuesday night.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Chelmsford Police and State Police detectives assigned to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.
