GLOUCESTER, Mass. — Family, friends and fellow fishermen gathered in Gloucester to remember the crew of a fishing vessel that went down off the coast.
Yesterday, the community gathered for the annual Fishermen’s Memorial Service in Gloucester.
The names of those on board the Lily Jean were added to the statue along the waterfront. family and friends also placed flowers at the statue and in the water.
The Gloucester Fishermen Memorial is a tribute to all fishermen lost at sea dating back to 1623.
Seven people died on January 30 when the Lily Jean went down. Only the body of Captain Gus Sanfilippo was recovered.
Yesterday, State Senator Bruce Tarr remembered not only the loss of the crew, but the impact on their families.
“When a fishing vessel is lost... there is a headline and it’s very dramatic.... wondering if your loved one is going to be rescued,” he said.
Last week, the Navy denied a request by the families to raise the ship and retrieve the remains.
